5 Reasons to Consider a New Heating System

Now that the weather has turned colder, you have probably started running your furnace. And, if you are like most people, you don’t think about your heating system until there is a problem. But if your heating system is more than a decade old now might be the time to consider a new system. It’s a big decision, so here are five reasons why it might be the time to start moving forward:

New Technology

Typical systems in most homes are 80% efficient, but currently there are furnaces that are 98% efficient, and that translates into significant savings to your utility bills over the years and reduces your energy footprint and impact on the environment. Other new or significantly improved technology include Variable speed blower motors, 2-stage & modulating gas valves, 2-stage & inverter compressors, Ultra Violet lights that improve indoor air quality by killing viruses, molds & bacteria, humidifiers that enhance efficiency and your comfort, and smart controls that learn your habits and adjusts heat and humidity accordingly.

Is Your System the Right Size?

If your system was installed more than a few years ago it is probably too big for your house based on today’s standards. Systems installed in the 70’s and 80’s were far less efficient and needed to be bigger to handle the workload. Plus, if you have upgraded your windows, siding, or insulation in recent years, that, too, can reduce the need for a larger-sized system.

A proper manual J-load calculation run on a home helps determine the size of a system that is best for your home. After doing so (especially with older homes), we often come back and say, "Hey, this house doesn't need 80,000 BTUs, it only needs 60.” This, again, will translate to higher efficiency and lower energy bills.

Do You Want AC?

Many times, homeowners don't consider installing air conditioning along with their new heating system. If you are going to be removing your furnace, you might want to look at installing air conditioning at the same time. The best time to install a cooling system is when the heating system out because ductwork and hook-ups are being redone anyway, so why not just do it all at once. This could save you considerably in installation costs.

Zoning

Which rooms do your family spend the most time in? Are there times of the day that you are working in your home office alone and the rest of the family is out of the house? Do you like your living area warm but your bedrooms cool? Do you have one room that is warmer or colder than others? Why, then, would you pay for heating the entire house when you are only using one or two rooms? Zoning systems use separate thermostats in each room or zone allowing you to customize the temperature for perfect comfort or to turn off a room that is not used as often to conserve energy. Zoning is often overlooked by homeowners, but it can make a substantial impact on your comfort and energy consumption.

Cost vs Efficiency

Homeowners often make the mistake of choosing the cheapest option, but sometimes “cheap” is not the best solution and could potentially cost you more in the long run. For example, if you are replacing an 80% furnace another 80% furnace, you are doing yourself a disservice. You can get a much higher efficiency furnace that will pay for itself within a few years and then save you even more long-term. Also, consider the installer. A cut-rate installer may not be dealer certified (or licensed or certified at all!) and make mistakes that voids the manufacturer’s warranty or puts your family in danger.
